Political Differences

From the hood of the prius
The chaos looks small.
The windshield doesn’t smash in,
It pixelates.
The air is metallic,
By that I don’t mean it tastes like metal,
I mean its solid, resilient and man-made,
Its only weakness
The persistent erosion of sea air.
From the hood of the prius,
I stare into the boy eyes of the riot gear,
Taking pity on the…
He sprays rubber bullets and tear gas,
Symbols of his failed yearnings
To penetrate in high school,
Continuing to fail to blow a real load.

From my vantage point
Behind the fiberglass shield,
I wonder if they know I’m human.
I wonder if they know for some this is just a job.
I wonder if they know
I’m on their side,
That I’m just trying to make sure
My son doesn’t starve,
(but that doesn’t mean I want him to grow up a slave)
I wonder if they know
About the order to switch to live rounds.
